Exam Structure

The NBE Diploma in Anaesthesiology exam is designed to comprehensively test your knowledge and clinical skills. The exam consists of the following components:

1st Half (9 AM - 1 PM)

1. Long Cases: In the first half, from 9 AM to 1 PM, you will be allotted 2 long cases. Each case is worth 50 marks, making a total of 100 marks.


2. Short Cases / ICU Cases : During this session, you will provide a brief history of the patient. The examiners will ask specific questions or request you to demonstrate particular examination findings or management techniques. Each case is worth 50 marks, totaling 100 marks.


2nd Half (2 PM - 5 PM)

Viva Voice: The viva voice section is divided into five table vivas, each worth 20 marks, making a total of 100 marks:

  • Table 1: Drugs and anaesthesia machine and instruments. Know all the drugs.

  • Table 2: Charts – Spirometry, DLCO, lung volumes, ABG interpretation, X-rays, ECG, and capnogram.

  • Table 3: CPR and Instruments – Usage of common instruments, oxygen delivery devices, BiPAP/CPAP, bronchoscopes, flexible fibreoptic.

  • Table 4: Recent advances.

  • Table 5: Communication and breaking bad news.


Tips for Exam Day

  • You are advised to reach the examination centre by 8 AM.

  • Have your breakfast before the exam.


Minimum Passing Marks

To pass the NBE Diploma in Anaesthesiology exam, you need to score at least 150 out of 300 marks. It's essential to distribute your preparation time effectively across all sections to ensure you meet the passing criteria.
